The Elderberry is a fantastic native shrub that will do well on the north side of a structure, in partial shade or full sun. Be sure the plant has a weed-free root zone and adequate water throughout the first growing season, then care should be minimal after that.
The bush can perform as a seasonal windbreak or privacy plant. The shrub can also be pruned back to maintain a size of your liking. The flowers are wonderfully aromatic and can be harvested and dried into tea or for use in salves.
Many birds, including orioles and tanagers, are attracted to elderberries.
